beginner's area
Hello and welcome to WRTrouters.com! This site was created to help you learn more about your equipment and how to expand the normal feature set beyond what Linksys provides. It's fairly easy to upgrade your router's firmware, which is the main focus of this web site. We have written a tutorial which can be found in the Guides section on upgrading. The WRT series is so popular because most of them run on upgradeable Linux. What does this mean? Anyone with some programming knowledge can update and change the operating system that the router runs on and add features. Firmware is the most popular upgrade but several hardware upgrades can also be done to expand RAM and such. Below are a few logical steps for those of you new to WRTs.

Steps:
1. Find Your Router Version - Before you can pick firmware, you most know what exact router you have. If you have a WRT54GS version 4 or higher or a WRT54G version 5 or higher you cannot upgrade beyond Linksys.
2. Pick Firmware - Select your router from the list. You'll get a list of firmware options. Hopefully you can upgrade beyond Linksys firmware. I'd suggest that beginner's upgrade to Thibor's firmware first. Then if you want more features, upgrade to DD-WRT or Sveasoft.
3. Upgrading Firmware - Download the firmware file, then read the instructions for how to upgrade via a web interface. Internet Explorer should be used for upgrading.
4. Now that you're running third-party firmware, you have expanded what you're router can do. Enjoy your like-new router.
